Gap, Banana Republic Eliminate Global CMO Roles

Restructuring Merges Marketing, E-Commerce Teams

By  Published on

Gap, Inc. is eliminating the global CMO positions for the Gap and Banana Republic brands, effective immediately, the company said today. The role will be replaced by a head of customer experience, a new position that broadens the CMO role to include e-commerce and reports to the individual brands' global presidents.

The move is part of a restructuring effort aimed at merging the brands' marketing and e-commerce teams to create a unified approach that centers on the customer.
"Now's the time to intensify our customer focus and break-through with a truly dynamic and integrated approach to building relationships with our customers," said Jeff Kirwan, global brand president of Gap, in a statement.

The change comes as Art Peck gears up to take over as CEO, replacing Glenn Murphy, and it follows executive changes among the brands' leadership teams.
Longtime Gap executive Scott Key has been named senior VP and general manager-customer experience of Gap brand, reporting to Mr. Kirwan. And Aimee Lapic will take on the same role at Banana Republic, reporting to Global Brand President Andi Owen. Ms. Lapic was previously senior VP-marketing and general manager of Gap Outlet International.
Gap CMO Seth Farbman -- known for overhauling the brand's marketing -- will depart his role on Jan. 31, as previously announced, though he will stay on as an advisor for a period of time. Banana Republic CMO Catherine Sadler, who was tasked with unifying the brand for longtime customers and newcomers, stepped down from her role late last year. Ivan Wicksteed will be Gap Inc.'s only remaining global CMO, leading marketing for Old Navy.
The company created global CMO positions as part of a broader effort to expand outside of the U.S. and strengthen its marketing efforts. In 2011, Mr. Farbman was named the brand's first global CMO, while Ms. Sadler and Mr.
Wicksteed took on their roles at Banana Republic and Old Navy, respectively, in 2013.
Analysts at Jefferies see the news as a step in the right direction, explaining in a note to investors that they expect it will bring a fresh take to the brands and re-engage consumers.

Gap is also eliminating the Creative Director role currently held by Rebekka Bay, who is stepping down, effective immediately, the company said. Ms. Bay joined the retailer in 2012 in a bid to help make the brand more relevant and its clothing more appealing.
Gap Inc. sales fell 1% during the third quarter of 2014 to $3.97 billion. Same-store sales were up 1% in December, driven by gains at Old Navy, the company reported. Wieden & Kennedy, New York is the lead global agency for Gap brand, while Laird & Partners handles Banana Republic.

Social media plays one of the most important rolls in the big companies. Ch. 3 - Ethics & Social Responsibility

Banana Republic is a brand owned by Gap, and it apply the social responsibility while taking care of the environment. well this what i found out while reading some articles about banana republic. but in other article i read it said that Gap is not caring about the ethics and social responsibility in others countries, for example, in  India and Bangladesh factories were hiring 10 years old children. And also they paid them low wages and there even was a case where three people died because the company forced them to work even though they were sick. which might be true or might not is that banana republic under Gap owners, could be protecting the environment and the society in the U.S. but it can be destroying it in another parts of the world.

GAP INC Corporate Social Responsibility

Gap Inc. is an American apparel company headquartered in San Francisco, founded in 1969 by Don and Doris Fischer. Gap Inc. is the umbrella company that market the brands: Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy,  Athleta, and PiperLime.
Today the company’s market cap is valued at 15 billion dollars.  Having an over 35-year history with over 130,000 employees, they currently operate in 8 countries and have franchises in 24 countries. Gap has the resources and  motivation to invest in a corporate social responsibility program  that enhances the external public image as well as for the company for it’s own intersts for the  stakeholders.
The main tenant of Gaps Social Responsibility program is the idea that investing in the community, stakeholders, employees, and shareholders leads to collective benefit for everyone. The Gap is an example of a company trying to leverage it’s business and assets to help innovate for social challenges. Every year, along with it’s corporate annual report, Gap Inc. published a separate accompanying report and statement about its CSR program.
Their corporate social responsibility program is developed into  three elements.  First, the supply chain; which includes, factories, vendors, suppliers and the distribution channels to market.  The second element includes environmental impact, and thirdly is community and charitable giving.
ENVIROMENT
Gap’s focus on the environment includes energy  conservation, sustainable design, and reduction of waste.  At the company’s San Francisco headquarters, employees sort their meal waste by use of composting and recycling bins in the cafeteria.
The company has also taken steps to decrease their environmental impact and reduce dependence of fossil fuels. In 2008 they completed the installation of a solar power system grid in their west coast distribution center.  In their other DCs’ across the US, they have installed energy efficient fluorescent lights their distribution centers saving 2 million dollars annually  in energy cost. They are currently  rolling out a program that includes changing the lighting, paint and fixtures in Old Navy stores to more energy efficient design. Some the recycling programs they are implementing include  the reduction of corrugated cardboard use, and aggressive reduction of solid waste in their retail stores.
HERE IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

Gap

Jump to Gap : Alerts; Campaigns;

Gap brand stores are so popular that a shopping center without a Gap or its subsidiaries, Banana Republic and Old Navy, is a rare sight. While the Gap has made some progress towards becoming a more sustainable company, such as promoting diversity and encouraging community involvement, the company has a long way to go before it can be considered socially responsible.
• In October 2007, Indian authorities raided factories in New Dehli that produce clothing for the Gap and found children as young as 10 working there.
• Another Indian factory that manufactures for the Gap was the site of 3 deaths in 2007 because it refused to allow employees to leave when they became seriously ill at work.
• The Gap was part of a settlement from a lawsuit brought against 22 companies for using sweatshop labor in Saipan, a US territory in the South Pacific. The Gap has also been linked to sweatshops in at least six countries.

Ch. 1 - Overview of Marketing (Brief History and Mission Statement)

Well, I was trying to find out what is the mission statement of Banana Republic, then I found out that it does not have any mission statement since Gap Inc bought this company in 1983. So, for that reason Banana Republic has the same mission statement as Gap Inc.

Name of the Retailer :

Gap Inc is a retailer conglomerate that sells casual apparel, accessories, and personal care under the brands Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Forth and Towne, and Piperlime.

Mission Statement :

Gap Inc's mission statement states “Gap Inc is a brand builder. We create emotional connections with customers around the world through inspiring product design, unique experiences, and compelling marketing.” (Gap.com) This mission statement is basically stating that Gap Inc would like to establish a solid relationship with their customers by continuing to provide quality and innovated merchandise as well as to originate a distinctive atmosphere to make the customers shopping experience feel like much more then just shopping.

Banana Republic brings a fresh twist on classic apparel to men and women around the world. The company that started as a safari outfitter in San Francisco now outfits a whole new generation of explorers in clothes that walk the line between easy and refined.
Our promise is to be the “True Outfitters of Modern American Style.”  And through this, we’ll enable our customers to live their True Style. We believe that True Style is more than what you wear. It reflects how you live, how you choose to navigate your life, and how you show up.
